Running Grand Theft Auto IV at 1080p

Most of us were quite surprised to learn that the PS3 version of GTA IV ran at a lower resolution than the Xbox 360 version. While the Xbox 360 version ran at 720p the PS3 version ran at a paltry 640p. Quite ironic given the Sony touting the PS3 as the only true HD gaming system.

One crafty PS3 user has found a way to "force" Grand Theft Auto IV on the PS3 to run in 1080p. There are some caveats though, as the TV you are using but be connected through the PS3 with HDMI cables, the TV must be able to output 1080p, and the TV must be in the 40 inch range.

Video showing the process of running GTA 4 in 1080p on PS3

To run the game in 1080p you need to:
Go to to the display option under settings
Select video output settings
Select HDMI
Select custom
Untick 1080i and 720p
Press X
Press X again
Select finish
Launch game

While we know it works from the Youtube video above we haven't gotten any proof that it actually makes the picture look any better, or if it looks better than the Xbox 360 version because of this. We leave it up to you, our trusted reader, to try it and let us know if you get a substantial graphics boost. Let us know.

Update: Patrick at Ripten shot me an email to let me know that "Even though your PS3 will output at 1080p, the game is still being rendered at 640p, but being upscaled to 1080p (by the PS3 itself)"
